Find way to preserve cabin

It is such a shame to see Pitt-Johnstown administrators have decided not to renovate the Log Cabin because it costs too much.

Because the Log Cabin was built in the 1970s, it does not meet the standards of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, which means that people in wheelchairs are not able to enter or use the restrooms.

Although we understand that funding is a factor in making the decision not to renovate the Log Cabin, we still hate to see administrators give up on it.

The Log Cabin has history to it– it has been on the Pitt-Johnstown campus through its ups and downs, rains and snows for over 50 years. It is an inseparable part of the campus and part of students’ memories.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, which suggests that the Log Cabin has not met the standards of the Act for about 22 years.

The Pitt-Johnstown Alumni Association Board members started fundraising to renovate the Log Cabin in 2011, but even before that, weren’t there others who brought up the idea of the renovation?

When a problem occurs, the goal is to solve the problem, not ignore it and hope the problem solves itself.

The Log Cabin is never going to renovate itself, and it will be inaccessible to those in wheelchairs forever if something isn’t done about it.

The world is changing.

While it is crucial to make sure that the campus has facilities that are up-to-date and build new buildings for the growing population of students, a priority for administrators should be maintaining and fixing what’s already on campus.

We hope that Log Cabin is renovated someday.

It is a unique place with opportunities for creative use and development. It also has history and doesn’t deserve to be left rotting in the ground.
