Pitt-Johnstown is not a school defined by its sports programs. In fact, most students (even the athletes) are here for academics.
But, it is refreshing to see a fall sport making a break while other fall sports teams are finishing up their seasons with losing records.
The men’s golf team finished in a groove this year, winning second place at the conference championships and nearly taking first.
This year’s finish was the best for the Pitt- Johnstown golfers since becoming eligible for conference championships in 2007.
At the regional tournament, UPJ placed fifth and Bluefield (W. Va.) State placed sixth. It has been stroke for stroke between the two teams.
Bluefield State registered a three-round total 934 , 70 over par, to win the championship. Pitt-Johnstown shot a three-round score of 936, 72 over par, to finish second. Not bad.
The UPJ golf program does not have home golf tournaments. But even without momentous support, the men’s golf team swung well.
The fairway has not always been smooth for the golfers, especially at a school with many losing teams.
The team’s dedication and willingness to buckle down and go for the gold has been rewarded in their fall season conclusion.
Some other UPJ teams are having success as well. The men’s soccer team earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament and Lady Cat volleyball has won four straight matches to improve their overall record. Some wrestlers already are ranked.
However, the second- place success is good for a sport that often lingers outside of the athletic spotlight. It is nice to see athletes who persevere and triumph get a time to shine.
Although second place probably was not the ace the team was looking for, it is a putt in the right direction.
