Pitt-Oakland student Alina Sheykhet died Oct. 8 from sharp or blunt trauma to the head, according to an autopsy result reported in the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette.

In a news release, city police officers said investigators went to an off-campus apartment in 3500 block at Cable Place at 8:56 a.m., where they found Sheykhet unresponsive on the second floor, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Article.

The newspaper reported that police officers arrested Matthew Darby, 21, of Greensburg, Westmoreland County Oct. 11 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and charged him with criminal homicide in Sheykhet’s death.

Sheykhet obtained a protection-from-abuse order against Darby last month.

Darby also was charged in March with rape and sexual assault in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

The Post-Gazette reported that Darby also had been charged with criminal trespass Sept. 26 for allegedly breaking into Sheykhet’s apartment.

Pitt-Oakland spokesman Joe Miksch said in a statement Oct. 8 that the Pitt-Oakland campus was saddened and extended its deepest sympathies to the student’s family and those who knew her.
