Building lacks some services
January 18, 2017
The 81 College Park Apartments residents have not been as equipped in their housing as other campus residents.
Unlike most other residence halls, the building has not had an electronic lock, which prevents those without a student ID card from using entrances.
Senior James Prosser, a building resident, said he has been able to open the’ entrances with his room key since he moved to the building Jan. 2.
Housing Director Sherri Rae said the building’s lack of electronic locks will not last long.
“The (electronic locks) for both the front and rear doors are due to be installed within the week. “Right now, student room keys (alone can open) the (building’s) exterior doors, and we encourage students not to prop (open) the exterior doors for guests.”
Also, according to Prosser, the building was still without cable TV last Thursday, which is still being implemented, according to Rae.
“Cable is under the purview of Atlantic Broadband, who will continue to work toward getting everything done as soon as possible,” Rae said.
The roof’s reconstruction, a part of the three-year reconstruction with a $6.5 million budget, according to the article “Campus apartments set to be renovated” from The Advocate, also seemed incomplete, as parts of the roof were still fenced.
“Major work from our contractor within the building is finished – the roof is done from a structural standpoint. They are now working on the cosmetic edging and will finish quickly, as long as the weather holds.”
According to Rae, the building can still admit 59 more residents. She also said two-person and four-person apartments are still available to anyone interested in moving in.
A campus police phone number was listed on a poster on a residence assistant room’s door, along with the College Park Apartment’s duty phone number.
It is also unclear whether campus police officers have patrolled the building. Campus Police Chief Eric Zangaglia was unavailable Friday.
Campus Police Officer Brian Colbert declined to answer questions regarding the building’s safety.
