Ski Club gets a lift from initial interest gathering

More than 60 students attended Pitt-Johnstown Ski Club’s first meeting 5 p.m Thursday.

“We had one in the past (a ski club), (but) it went inactive, However, the greatest asset we have in Pennsylvania for recreation is ski,” Club advisor Paul Newman said.

The club was inactive last academic year.

Students went through a club budget report, saying that the group had more than $3000 because of the past fundraising. After discussion, club members decided to impose $20 in annual dues for each member.

The tasks for this fall are arranging and planning activities. Activities include information of an executive committee, utilizing social media and updating the Facebook page “UPJ Ski & Board Club” with a calendar of events.

Club members also are to re-establish a relationship with Seven Spring Mountain Resort.

Spring events include car-pooling several skiing trips per week, a van trip to Seven Springs in late January or February and one regional trip February to Wisp ski slope in McHenry, Md. There us also a weekend and one overnight trip north: Gore Mountain in North Creek, N.Y., and Lake George, N.Y.

During the meeting, students had discussions about ideas on trips, fundraising and a banquet at the log cabin at the end of the spring .

The President, Russell Varmecky announced that students will have a meeting every two weeks, 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The students who volunteered to join the executive committee had more detailed discussion about the budget, communication with Student Government representatives and trips.
