Monday starts the week-long event for Around the World in 7 Days, where there will be a dish from another country at lunchtime in the Pitt-Johnstown cafeteria every day leading up to the international celebration Saturday.

The celebration is to have international snacks, activities and games from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountain Cat Club, and yoga in the Cambria room.

Amanda Shaheen, one of the coordinators of the event said activities Jan. 28 will include various games and art forms.

“We will be having someone teach Mandarin Chinese writing and we will have games like Mancala for people to play,” said Shaheen. “We will also have a woman doing African dances and drumming.”

Dedra Totin, another one of the three women who put the event together, said it is a way for UPJ students to learn about international culture at UPJ.

“We put this event together to help students learn about the differences between other countries and our own,” Totin said. “We got help from some of the international students (at UPJ) to figure out some popular games and foods from their countries.”

All of the recipes that will be used to make the food were given to the cafeteria chefs by various international students according to Totin.

The week-long event was formed by Totin, Shaheen and Sarah Weaver after being awarded the Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership scholarship and spending their summer in London.

“We had to form the event from scratch,” Totin said. “But we had a lot of help from the international students and campus chefs in making the event possible.”
